In honor of Thanksgiving, I’d like to start this week’s “Resumania” column by highlighting a resume and cover letter for which I am thankful. Consider this excellent objective from a recent graduate:
“OBJECTIVE: To secure an entry-level print design position with an ad agency that will give me an opportunity to apply my degree in advertising and three years’ experience as art director of my college newspaper.”
The candidate hit the right tone by succinctly defining his goal in a reasonably narrow frame while successfully summarizing his background. Job seekers often pack too much “stuffing” into a resume’s objective statement. Remember: Prospective employers are looking for a concise sentence or two explaining what you can offer - not a list of what you want from them.
